Judy Mayhan – Judy Mayhan (1971)
Artist: Judy Mayhan
Title: Judy Mayhan
Year: 1971
Format: LP
Label: Decca
Judy Mayhan began her recording career in 1962 when Horizon Records released her first LP, Rockin’ The Cradle. The album presented Judy’s remarkably clear and precise soprano voice singing traditional American folk songs and accompanying herself on mountain dulcimer.
By 1962 Judy had made her way cross-country with Hoyt Axton, performing in the folk scenes of San Francisco and Los Angeles, including the Troubadour, where she was offered this first album opportunity. After the album release, she appeared on the Steve Allen TV variety show. Her clear soprano voice and sensitivity to the deeper meaning of a song became well known in folk music circles.
Not one to be pigeonholed in a single genre, and influenced by all kinds of music, Judy went on to record two popular albums for Atco/Atlantic “Moments” in 1970 (see July 7, 2010 post), and this album for Decca in 1971. (Prairie Prince Minsky)

It has been a while since I recorded thanks to Leonard for his wonderful postings since I discovered redtelephone66 at the beginning of last year……the red-phone has seen its ups and downs and has faced up to all challenges to emmerge in its latest incarnation as a shining light…..the music being highlighted here, deserves the ears of discerning listeners out in the ‘real’ world……
Hearing what’s here is like meandering through a past of missed opportunities…..in the past the music here was heard by so few…..hearing these sounds really brings the past to life….history does not need to be found within learned tomes….it is to be found in the beats of the street and the studio….the individuals and groups wanted to be heard….some of the albums are lazier than others, some may even said to be worse than others…but that’s all in the ears of the beholder, all I feel is: all postings deserve a listen……
Hey and mediafire as a link is pretty neat too…..
Leonard thank you for all you do, from my little corner of Scotland….
Hello Cy,
It’s great to hear from you, thanks for the kindness and thank you for sending me the recent photos, appreciated as always.
Had this one (as I did so many of the LPs you post) mainly due to the kindness of the local MCA/Decca rep, Ed Terracino who knew me as one of the few of his accounts who would actually listen to the records he left with us and give him some feedback and actually sell a copy or two of these marginal LPs. Nice to hear this one again. It did claim turntable space from me for a coujple of weeks way back when it was new…but i was a sucker for girls back then, Joni, Carole, Judy Collins, Sandy Denny…
To Duncanmusic – you mention the wonderful Ed Terracino – do you know his whereabouts? He was such as super guy, and loved to turn me on to records when I worked at a one stop and later a store, including Judy’s which I still cherish. I just mentioned him on my blog, somanyrecordssolittletime.com. Please email me with any info and thanks: promocopy@nyc.rr.com
